Frugal & Natural Cleaning Recipes D-E:

Dishwasher Detergent:
Mix 1 tablespoon borax and 1 tablespoon baking soda. Place mixture into your dishwasher's detergent compartment and run as usual. The borax and baking soda are both natural disinfectants and mild abrasives.

Dishwasher Rinse Agent:
Finish remaining commercial rinse agent in your dishwasher, fill your dishwasher's rinse agent dispenser well with white vinegar, refill as needed.

Dishwasher Cleaner (removes soap and mineral deposits):
When your dishwasher needs a little pick-me-up, run a cycle with 1 cup of white vinegar (no soap). This will remove the soap and mineral deposits (from hard water). Do monthly.

Disinfectant:
  • Recipe 1: Fill a 16 ounce spray bottle almost to the top with water. Add 3 tablespoons of castile soap and 20 - 30 drops of tea tree oil, and shake to mix. The castile soap and tea tree oil can be found in a health food store. Tea tree oil has natural antiseptic qualities. This is great to use during flu season on doorknobs, sink handles, phones, and other commonly handled surfaces.
  • Recipe 2: Spray full strength white vinegar around bathroom or kitchen to kill germs, then wipe with clean, damp cloth.
  • Recipe 3: Combine 1/2 cup Borax into 1 gallon full strength vinegar to clean and disinfect surfaces.
  • Recipe 4: Combine 1/2 cup Borax into 1 gallon hot water. Add a few sprigs of fresh thyme, rosemary or lavender. Steep for 10 minutes then remove herbs and cool. Store in a plastic spray bottle. Note: Essential oils can be used instead of fresh herbs.
  • Recipe 5: Combine 2 tablespoons borax, 1/4 cup lemon juice, 2 cups hot water. Combine the borax and lemon juice with the water in a spray bottle. Use as you would any commercial all-purpose cleaner.
  • Recipe 6: Isopropyl Alcohol is an excellent disinfectant. Sponge on and allow todry. Use in a well-ventilated area and wear gloves.
  • Children's Toy Disinfectant: Toys can be safely disinfected by wiping with white vinegar or mouthwash.

Drain cleaner:
First, try a plunger. Then, pour a cup of baking soda down the drain, follow with one cup hot white vinegar. Let sit for 5 minutes then run hot water down the drain. Do this regularly to prevent buildup.
