Frugal & Natural Cleaning Recipes F:

Fabric Softener:
Add a cup of white vinegar to your washer's rinse cycle. This will eliminate static cling, remove the soap residue in your clothes, soften the laundry, and make the towels more absorbent. For a naturally scented fabric softener, you can add a few drops of your favorite essential oil (found in health food stores) to the vinegar.

Fireplace Cleaner:
Fireplace soot and grime can be removed with full strength white vinegar. Use a brush to scrub and a towel to blot up the wetness and dirt.

Fireplace glass doors can be cleaned with a solution of 1 part of white vinegar to 2 parts of water. Spray or wipe on, then wipe clean with a dry cloth, paper towel, or crumpled newspaper.

Floor Cleaner (For No-wax vinyl, Linoleum, or Tile Floors):
  • Recipe 1: Add 1 cup white vinegar to a gallon of water. Add 10-15 drops of essential oil for scent, if desired. Scrub or mop floor with mixture.
For stains, full strength vinegar can be used. Leave on the area for 15 minutes before wiping up.
For tougher stains, sprinkle some baking soda over the white vinegar and scrub with a brush or sponge. Rinse clean with water.
  • Recipe 2: Mix a solution of 3 drops of castile soap (or dishwashing liquid) to equal parts of white vinegar, alcohol and water. Spray sparingly and mop for a fast clean up.
  • Recipe 3: Combine 1 cup vinegar, 1/4 cup washing soda, 1 tablespoon castile soap and 2 gallons of hot water. Stir to dissolve the washing soda then mop as usual.

Furniture polish:
  • Recipe 1: Combine equal parts of white vinegar and lemon juice in a bowl or spray bottle, rub a small amount of the mixture into the furniture with one cloth, and wipe dry with another cloth.
  • Recipe 2: Combine 1 cup olive oil and 1/2 cup lemon juice in a bowl or spray bottle, rub a small amount of the mixture into the furniture with a clean cloth, and wipe dry with another cloth.
  • Recipe 3: Mix 1/4 cup olive oil with 4 tablespoons white vinegar and 2 teaspoons lemon juice. Pour into spray bottle and shake well before using. The olive oil will add needed moisture to your wood while the vinegar will clean it. Any unused portion should be stored in the refrigerator as the lemon juice can sour with time. In place of the lemon juice you can use 20 - 30 drops of lemon essential oil without the need to refrigerate.
  • White Water Ring Remover: Water rings can be removed from wood with a solution of equal parts of white vinegar and vegetable oil. Rub with the grain.
Fruit and Vegetable Wash:
Mix equal parts of white vinegar and water in a clean spray bottle. This mixture can also be mixed in a bowl and the produce soaked for a few minutes. Then rinse. The vinegar will kill germs, cut through the wax on some produce, and remove pesticide residue.
